# Character.AI: Web Access and Crawlers for Site Owners

> Character.AI documents no web search, page fetches or crawler. What this means for site owners, and why there is no robots.txt rule for it.

Character.AI is a chat platform where people role-play with characters that users create. Character.AI does not document web search, page fetches, source links or a crawler. There is no documented user agent to allow or block, so a site owner has nothing to configure for it.

## What Character.AI is

The Character.AI [Safety Center](https://support.character.ai/hc/en-us/articles/21704914723995-Safety-Center) calls it "an interactive entertainment platform". Users write their own stories and role-play with original characters.

The same page says that a proprietary model drives the conversations, and that Character.AI updates this model over time. The page does not say that the model uses live web content.

## Web access and sources

The Character.AI help center does not describe a web search feature, page fetches or citations to websites.

Character.AI also does not document a crawler, a robots.txt token or an IP list. robots.txt is a text file at the site root with rules for crawlers. Without a documented token, you cannot write a robots.txt group for Character.AI.

## Requests that use the name

A request in your logs can claim to come from Character.AI. There is no published IP list, so you have no way to prove that it is real. Handle such a request like any other unknown client.
