# OpenChat: Open-Source LLM Fine-Tuned With C-RLFT

> OpenChat is a family of open-source language models trained with C-RLFT. Versions, licenses, project status, and why it has no crawler or user agent.

OpenChat is a family of open-source language models. Its authors fine-tuned existing base models, such as Llama 3 and Mistral 7B, with a method called C-RLFT. OpenChat is a model, not a web service. It does not browse the web and has no crawler or user agent. A site owner has nothing to allow or block for it.

## What OpenChat is

The method comes from the paper [OpenChat: Advancing Open-source Language Models with Mixed-Quality Data](https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.11235). Its authors are Guan Wang, Sijie Cheng, Xianyuan Zhan, Xiangang Li, Sen Song and Yang Liu. The first version appeared on September 20, 2023. C-RLFT is a training method that uses the source of each example as a rough quality signal. With it, a model can learn from data of mixed quality without preference labels.

The code is on [GitHub](https://github.com/imoneoi/openchat) under the Apache 2.0 license. The README says that the 7B model can run on a consumer GPU.

## Versions and licenses

| Model | Release date | Base model | Model license |
|---|---|---|---|
| [OpenChat 3.6](https://huggingface.co/openchat/openchat-3.6-8b-20240522) | 2024-05-22 | Llama 3 8B | Llama 3 license |
| [OpenChat 3.5 0106](https://huggingface.co/openchat/openchat-3.5-0106) | 2024-01-06 | Mistral 7B | Apache 2.0 |

The README also lists earlier OpenChat 3.5 releases from November and December 2023.

## Project status

OpenChat 3.6 is the newest model in the README. The last commit in the GitHub repository is from May 24, 2024. The repository is not archived. On October 22, 2026, the project homepage, openchat.team, showed only a "Restricted Domain" notice.

## OpenChat and your website

OpenChat only generates text from the input that it gets. It does not send requests to websites. If an app that uses OpenChat also reads web pages, the request comes from that app. Look for the user agent of that app in your logs, not for OpenChat.
