Kangaroo Bot: Kangaroo LLM Crawler and robots.txt
Kangaroo Bot is the crawler of Kangaroo LLM, an Australian open-source LLM project. Its robots.txt token, the project status and how to block it.
Kangaroo Bot is the crawler of Kangaroo LLM, an Australian project for an open-source language model. The project said that the bot follows robots.txt. Its documentation site is no longer online, so you cannot read the current user agent or contact details there.
Who runs it
Kangaroo LLM is a project for an open-source language model that focuses on Australia. It relies on unpaid volunteers. A group of technology companies backs it: Katonic AI, RackCorp, NEXTDC, Hitachi Vantara and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (ACS Information Age, September 2024).
The same article says these things about the crawler:
- The project calls Kangaroo Bot an “ethical” crawler. It planned to collect text from Australian websites to train the model.
- The project said that the bot respects robots.txt files and that it removes personal data from the collected text.
- A site can opt out with a robots.txt rule or with an email to the project. The project said that it removes the data of these sites once a month.
- In September 2024, the crawler was on standby while the project set up a legal advisory team.
Status of the project site
Bot lists give https://kangaroollm.com.au/kangaroo-bot/ as the official page of the bot (Known Agents). On October 22, 2026, this address showed a domain parking page with no bot information. We found no other operator page, IP list or reverse DNS method.
User agent
The robots.txt token in bot lists is Kangaroo Bot, with a space (ai.robots.txt, Known Agents). The lists do not agree on the full user agent string, and we were not able to compare them with the operator page. To find all forms in your access log, search for the word, not for one exact string:
grep -i "kangaroo" /var/log/nginx/access.log
The log path in this example is the default for nginx on Debian and Ubuntu. Use the log path of your server.
Block Kangaroo Bot in robots.txt
If you want to ask Kangaroo Bot not to crawl your site, add this group to /robots.txt:
User-agent: Kangaroo Bot
Disallow: /
Some lists record the name as one word, KangarooBot (crawler-user-agents). If your log shows that form, add a second group:
User-agent: KangarooBot
Disallow: /
Any client can send these names. If requests continue after you add the rules, block the user agent or the IP address on your server or in your firewall. For other AI crawlers and how to identify them, see how to find and block AI crawlers on your site.
