# SeznamBot: Seznam.cz Crawler User Agent and robots.txt

> SeznamBot crawls for Seznam.cz search. Its user agent, IP list, reverse DNS names and robots.txt rules, including the Request-rate directive.

SeznamBot is the crawler of Seznam.cz, a Czech company with its own search engine. It downloads pages for the Seznam search index. Seznam says that SeznamBot fully follows robots.txt, and it publishes the IP addresses and hostnames of the bot.

## User agent

The [SeznamBot page](https://o-seznam.cz/napoveda/vyhledavani/en/seznambot-crawler/) gives this string:

```
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; SeznamBot/4.0; +https://o-seznam.cz/napoveda/vyhledavani/en/seznambot-crawler/)
```

Seznam also runs FreshBot, a fast crawler for pages and RSS feeds with fresh content, mostly on news sites. The page gives no user agent for FreshBot. It also lists a test version of SeznamBot with its own IP addresses.

## Identify real SeznamBot requests

Seznam says that SeznamBot IP addresses have reverse DNS names like these:

| Bot | IPv4 example | IPv6 example |
|---|---|---|
| SeznamBot | `fulltextrobot-77-75-77-xxx.seznam.cz` | `fulltextrobot-2a02-598-64-8a00--302-340.seznam.cz` |
| Test version | `fulltextrobot-test-77-75-73-26.seznam.cz` | `fulltextrobot-test-2a02-598-64-8a00--f00-0.seznam.cz` |

To identify a real request, do these steps:

1. Run a reverse DNS lookup (a query for the hostname of an IP address) on the request IP.
2. Make sure that the hostname starts with `fulltextrobot` and ends in `.seznam.cz`.
3. Make sure that the IP address is in the [SeznamBot IP list](https://search.seznam.cz/ipranges/seznambot.json).

The SeznamBot page lists the IPv4 networks 77.75.76.x, 77.75.77.x, 77.75.78.x and 77.75.79.x. The JSON file has the full current list. Seznam reads IndexNow keys from the IP addresses 77.75.72.74 and 77.75.73.74. IndexNow is a protocol that tells search engines about changed URLs.

## Block SeznamBot in robots.txt

The [crawling control page](https://o-seznam.cz/napoveda/vyhledavani/en/crawling-control/) gives these examples.

If you want to block SeznamBot from the whole site, add this group:

```
User-agent: SeznamBot
Disallow: /
```

If you want to block one directory, name the directory:

```
User-agent: SeznamBot
Disallow: /discussion/
```

SeznamBot also supports `Allow`, `Sitemap` and two wildcards: `*` for any characters and `---

blocks PDF files.

After a change, SeznamBot usually needs several days to read robots.txt again and update the index. For sites that it visits rarely, this can take several weeks.

## Limit the crawl rate with Request-rate

SeznamBot supports `Request-rate`, a rule for how many documents a bot can download in a time period. The format is `Request-rate: / `, for example `400/1h` or `9000/1d`. You can add a time of day in UTC:

```
User-agent: SeznamBot
Request-rate: 1/10s 1800-1900
```

This group allows one document every ten seconds between 18:00 and 19:00 UTC. At other times there is no limit. The slowest rate that SeznamBot accepts is one document every 10 seconds. It reads a lower value as this minimum.

## Stop indexing but allow crawling

If you want SeznamBot to download a page but not index it, allow the page in robots.txt. Then add this tag to the page:

```
```

SeznamBot must download the page to read the tag. See the [indexing control page](https://o-seznam.cz/napoveda/vyhledavani/en/indexing-control/) and the [meta robots guide](/html-tags/meta-robots/).
