# TikTokSpider: TikTok Crawler User Agent and Blocking

> TikTokSpider names TikTok in its user agent, but TikTok publishes no docs for it. The known user agent, what is not confirmed and how to block it.

TikTokSpider is a crawler whose user agent names TikTok and gives a tiktok.com feedback address. TikTok does not publish documentation for it. Its purpose, IP addresses and robots.txt behavior are not confirmed. If you do not want it on your site, block it in robots.txt and on your server.

## User-agent string

A user agent is the client name in the User-Agent HTTP header. Public bot lists, such as [crawler-user-agents](https://github.com/monperrus/crawler-user-agents), record this string:

```text
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 5.0) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile Safari/537.36 (compatible; TikTokSpider; ttspider-feedback@tiktok.com)
```

The address `ttspider-feedback@tiktok.com` in the string is the only contact that the crawler gives.

## What is known and what is not

TikTok has no public page for TikTokSpider. So TikTok does not document these facts:

- What the crawler collects and why
- Whether it reads robots.txt
- Which IP addresses it uses

Third-party bot directories describe TikTokSpider as a fetcher for link previews in TikTok. TikTok does not confirm this. [Bytespider](/ai-crawler-bot/bytespider/) is a different crawler from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok. Rules for one name do not apply to the other.

## Block TikTokSpider

robots.txt is a text file at the root of your site with rules for crawlers. You can add a group for the name in the user agent:

```text
User-agent: TikTokSpider
Disallow: /
```

TikTok does not say that the crawler obeys this rule. If you want to make sure that the requests stop, also block them on your web server. This nginx example returns HTTP 403 for any user agent that contains `TikTokSpider`:

```nginx
if ($http_user_agent ~* "TikTokSpider") {
    return 403;
}
```

Put the example in the `server` block of your site configuration, then reload nginx.

## Verify requests

TikTok publishes no IP list and no reverse DNS method for this crawler. Anyone can copy a user-agent string. A match in your logs does not prove that TikTok sent the request. If you have a question about the crawler, write to the address in its user agent.
