# Startpage: Private Search With Google and Bing Results

> Startpage sends queries to Google and Bing without personal data. It has no index or crawler, so Google and Bing decide what it shows for your site.

Startpage is a private search engine from the Netherlands. It sends each query to Google or Bing without the personal data of the user and shows the results that come back. Startpage has no index and no crawler of its own, so you control your Startpage visibility through Google and Bing.

## Who runs Startpage

The [Startpage About page](https://www.startpage.com/en/about-us/) says that Startpage launched in the Netherlands in 2006. Its [privacy policy](https://www.startpage.com/en/privacy-policy/) names Surfboard Holding BV in The Hague as the owner and operator.

## Where Startpage results come from

The Startpage help center says that its results come from Google and Microsoft Bing ([source](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/5138782571796-Why-isn-t-a-particular-site-appearing-in-the-results)). Startpage removes personal data such as the IP address, then sends the query to Google and Bing on behalf of the user ([source](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/4522435533844-What-is-the-relationship-between-Startpage-and-your-search-partners-like-Google-and-Microsoft-Bing)). Google and Bing see Startpage, not the user.

Startpage keeps no index of websites. It depends fully on the results from Google and Bing and does not change them ([source](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/4521418101524-How-to-use-Startpage-more-effectively)). Some result types use other partners. For example, [news results](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/5314644919188-News-Results) come from Bing.

Startpage does not personalize results. Your Startpage results can differ from the results that you get when you are signed in to Google.

## AI features

The About page says that there are no AI summaries or AI chatbots on Startpage. Startpage offers a separate AI app called Vanish.

## Get into Startpage results or out of them

- Startpage has no submission form. If your site is missing, the help center says that Startpage cannot add it, because Startpage keeps no index. Make sure that Google and Bing index your pages.
- If you want a result removed, remove it from Google and Bing first. Startpage cannot delete links itself ([source](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/4455371793684-I-want-to-remove-a-website-from-Startpage-s-search-results)).
- For removal requests under European data protection law, read the help center article on [the right to be forgotten](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/4455542393108-How-does-Startpage-handle-search-removal-requests-under-Data-Protection-law-in-Europe-The-Right-to-be-Forgotten).
- Startpage documents no crawler to block. Your robots.txt rules for [Googlebot](/ai-crawler-bot/googlebot/) and [Bingbot](/ai-crawler-bot/bingbot/) also affect what Startpage can show.

## Anonymous View visits

Each result has a link to open the page in Anonymous View. Anonymous View is a Startpage proxy, a server that loads pages for the user. Startpage loads your page and passes it to the user, so your site sees Startpage and not the visitor ([About page](https://www.startpage.com/en/about-us/)). The proxy blocks tracking cookies and rewrites JavaScript functions ([technical details](https://support.startpage.com/hc/en-us/articles/4455540212116-The-Anonymous-View-proxy-technical-details)). For these visits, your server logs show a Startpage server, not the visitor.
