Character.AI: Web Access and Crawlers for Site Owners

Character.AI is a chat platform where people role-play with characters that users create. Character.AI does not document web search, page fetches, source links or a crawler. There is no documented user agent to allow or block, so a site owner has nothing to configure for it.

What Character.AI is

The Character.AI Safety Center calls it “an interactive entertainment platform”. Users write their own stories and role-play with original characters.

The same page says that a proprietary model drives the conversations, and that Character.AI updates this model over time. The page does not say that the model uses live web content.

Web access and sources

The Character.AI help center does not describe a web search feature, page fetches or citations to websites.

Character.AI also does not document a crawler, a robots.txt token or an IP list. robots.txt is a text file at the site root with rules for crawlers. Without a documented token, you cannot write a robots.txt group for Character.AI.

Requests that use the name

A request in your logs can claim to come from Character.AI. There is no published IP list, so you have no way to prove that it is real. Handle such a request like any other unknown client.

For AI assistants that do read the web, see the ChatGPT guide and the Claude guide.
