Westlaw Edge AI: Status, Newer Versions and Sources
Westlaw Edge is a Thomson Reuters legal research platform from 2018, still sold next to Westlaw Advantage. It uses Westlaw content, not the open web.
Westlaw Edge is a legal research platform from Thomson Reuters, launched in July 2018, with AI features that use Thomson Reuters legal content. Thomson Reuters still sells it, next to the newer Westlaw Advantage. A website owner cannot add pages to it or block it.
Westlaw Edge and the newer versions
Westlaw Edge was not renamed. Thomson Reuters released newer Westlaw products and kept Westlaw Edge as a separate plan.
| Product | Announced | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Westlaw Edge | July 12, 2018 | Thomson Reuters press release |
| Westlaw Precision | September 14, 2022 | Thomson Reuters press release |
| Westlaw Advantage | August 5, 2025, with CoCounsel Legal | Thomson Reuters press release |
In October 2026, the Westlaw Edge product page still offers two plans: Westlaw Edge, and Westlaw Edge with AI-Assisted Research. The old Westlaw Precision product address now opens the Westlaw Advantage page.
AI features in Westlaw Edge
The product page lists these AI tools:
- AI-Assisted Research answers legal research questions. It uses Westlaw content and links directly to the cases, statutes and regulations behind the answer.
- AI Jurisdictional Surveys build surveys of the law for specific jurisdictions.
- Quick Check reviews a legal document and finds authority that the research possibly missed, including authority against the position of the opponent.
- KeyCite Overruling Risk and Litigation Analytics give citation and litigation data.
Westlaw Advantage adds Deep Research. Thomson Reuters describes it as agentic AI, which is AI that plans and runs steps on its own. Deep Research makes multi-step research plans and delivers reports with Westlaw and Practical Law citations.
What this means for a website owner
- Westlaw is a subscription database of legal content that Thomson Reuters collects and edits. It is not a web index.
- Thomson Reuters documents no crawler, user agent or robots.txt token for Westlaw Edge or its AI features.
- Thomson Reuters documents no way for a site owner to add a website to Westlaw or remove one from it.
